FINDING THE RIGHT SCHOOL

When we first moved to Punta del Este, finding the right school for our children was naturally one of the things that mattered most to us. Having now raised three children here, I've had the chance to experience the school system from a parent's perspective and to see just how many different options there actually are.

The map above shows just some of the schools available in and around Punta del Este. There is quite a variety, from Waldorf and Christian schools to traditional Uruguayan education, bilingual schools and more internationally oriented programs. Depending on the school, children can start as young as nursery or kindergarten and continue through primary and, in some cases, all the way through secondary school.

Most of the bilingual schools are conveniently located around the heart of Punta del Este, but there are also options farther out in areas such as Punta Ballena, La Barra and San Carlos. This is something worth considering when choosing where to live, as the school run can quickly become an important part of everyday family life.

One thing I have particularly appreciated is the importance many of the schools place on languages. There is a strong focus on learning English, while children coming from abroad are naturally immersed in Spanish at the same time. In my experience, this has been a wonderful way for children to improve their Spanish while continuing to develop their English.

Every child is different, of course, and every school has its own personality. Some families are looking for a more traditional education, others prefer a bilingual or international environment, and for some the philosophy and atmosphere of the school matter just as much as the curriculum.

After going through this process myself, I've learned that where you live and where your children go to school are often closely connected. When helping families who are new to Punta del Este, it's something I always think is worth looking at together — not just finding the right house, but finding the area and everyday life that will work for the whole family.
